Visiting Speyer, Germany During Your European River Cruise

Speyer, Germany is a popular river cruise port. This quiet town in located on west bank of the Rhine River. The Speyer Cathedral is the main attraction. We visited this port during our Viking River Cruise.

Once you disembark your Viking River Cruise ship, you should take a stroll through the Domgarten park on your way into Speyer, where you will find some unique statues.

The Speyer Cathedral: The first thing I was captivated by was the sculpture of the Mount of Olives located on the south side of the cathedral. This is such a special moment to embrace the beauty of the sculpture and the story it shares with all that see it. You will see Jesus on the Mount praying, the disciples are sleeping, and the Roman soldiers are on guard at the bottom. The architect details are incredible and a must see.

Upon entering the Speyer Cathedral, take a moment to view the façade and the meaning behind the five figures. The circle rose window above the façade represents the divine with four corners that represent the four Evangelist. I recommend taking time to walk through the Speyer Cathedral and take it all in.

We love to stroll around ports and find a spot for a sweet treat with cappuccino or coffee. We found a gem, Café – Konditorei Schlosser! The cheesecake and cappuccino were heavenly. Our schedule was tight because our Viking River Cruise arrival and departure time. Now, don’t worry, we still had time to explore, around 5.5 hours to be exact.
